A LIVING HISTORY OF ADELANTO

Adelanto is a city in San Bernardino County's Victor Valley. The Mojave Desert had Indigenous histories long before the modern townsite was developed in 1915. The city's formal founding and incorporation should not be confused with the beginning of human history in the area.

1915: The planned settlement

San Bernardino County's October 1, 2026 historical account and the City of Adelanto identify inventor Earl H. Richardson as a founder. After selling rights related to his electric iron innovation, Richardson bought land in the Victor Valley, reportedly for about $75,000. He divided the property into one-acre plots and envisioned a planned community for World War I veterans with respiratory illnesses, including a hospital. That hospital vision was not fully realized.

Orchards, livestock and work

The city's historical overview says deciduous fruit orchards once grew in the area and that a poultry economy expanded as orchard production declined during the Great Depression. The shift reflects the challenges of establishing livelihoods in an arid landscape. Farming and transport existed alongside changing community services and industrial development.

1941: Military aviation arrives

In 1941 an Army airfield opened in the wider area. In September 1950 the facility was renamed George Air Force Base to honor Brigadier General Harold H. George. The base and its later reuse became part of the broader Victor Valley's twentieth-century history.

1970 and 1992: Local government

Adelanto operated as a community services district before incorporation in 1970. The city adopted charter-city status in November 1992. Its local government today addresses planning, services, public infrastructure and civic decisions. The permanent History section covers historic milestones; current council agendas, events and development permits belong in dated news.
